My first job I shot for Target is up now on their website. We shot all their new swim suits for Juniors, Women's, and Kids in Miami in late December. I had such a blast working with Target in-house and am looking forward to a few more shoots coming up with them this month and next. EMAIL BLASTS

Everyone has their opinions about marketing. Especially when it comes to Email Promos. You could ask 100 people and possibly get 100 different answers. Some people love it, others hate it. I get maybe 10 a day, from different hair, makeup, stylists, agents, producers, you name it. I'll admit.. most.... I trash. But, the reality is, if I like the image, and the shoot looks strong, I will absolutely, click on it. There lies the strength of marketing. You can send images out all day long, and if they don't stand out, no one will care. Whether its an email promo, a printed postcard, or a special book or poster you've spent a thousand dollars on.... If the images don't speak for themselves, you are most likely going in the trash.

I say all of this, because I used to think email promos were a waste. Until I saw the design my agent inherited from her super talented designer Ophelia Chong. Every week, or every other week my agent Alyssa will send out an email promo of the latest new images of her photographers, that work. Weeks or months may go by that my images don't make the cut. That only means I don't have the images that are worth the money or the time, to send the darn things out.

I think all marketing is helpful, but good marketing, is being smart about your choices. Your images, your design, and layout need to stand out, showcase your strongest work, or you will.. get lost in the crowd.

NEW STUDIO WORK

I had a lot of fun today at 5th and Sunset Studios working on a new shoot for my book. I had the adorable Paisley from FORD models, the super talented Erika Parsons doing hair and makeup, and non other than my amazing sister Tawny Lehman styling for me. We spent a lot of time preparing, planning, and organizing the production of this shoot. I'm really happy with the results and can't wait to shoot a few more studio stories to compile a whole new body of work for my website. Shooting for yourself, no matter how busy you are, is so invigorating and refreshing. You can explore, push, and have fun with your work that jobs sometimes don't allow you to do. New Years in Utah

I got to spend the New Year celebration with some good friends just outside of Park City Utah. There was barely a drop of snow, as you can see, but we filled the time we're used to skiing with horseback riding, hiking, home made dinners, and games played into the wee hours of the night. Its one of my favorite vacations, this now yearly trip, and I think the good times are apparent in the little collage of our weekend.

Last winter I had the lovely opportunity to head to Aspen with my friends at FOAM Magazine to photograph 9 of the worlds top female snowboarders. We grabbed them post X games at the Viceroy hotel for a few hours each and explored their personalities on and off the snow. Its was a reunion for quite a few of us. I had photographed Torah Bright, Anne-Flore, Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Height, and Chanelle Sladics all before on several editorial and advertising campaigns in the past. We had a blast running around the hotel, shooting in the jacuzzi, the rooms, on the slopes, and just about everywhere we could find. Thanks so much to The Viceroy at Aspen Snow Mass for an unforgettable trip and all the girls at FOAM for putting together such a fun week. I HATE BALLS!

My very funny friend and animal advocate Katherine Heigl has launched a campaign today called I HATE BALLS! In an effort to raise awareness and promote the spay and neutering of pets. The very unconventional and hilarious campaign includes a skit on Funny or Die where Heigl announces her hate for balls more specifically testicles on animals. Its a funny take on a very serious issue, that she believes needs to be tackled at the very core. The more animals that get fixed, the less animals we have to see in pounds and shelters.

Annually more than 5 million pets are killed in shelters across the United States. Spay/neuter is the most effective method of helping to reduce that number to zero. A simple surgical procedure will eliminate the possibility of unwanted litters of companion animals, who are then subsequently abandoned at shelters and euthanized when homes can not be found for them.

Last week I had a good friend in town who is so lovely to photograph, another dear friend who's building her hair and makeup portfolio, and a talented new friend who was looking to style. I rented a 15 passenger van, loaded up the crew, and headed out to Pearblossom Highway off the 14 freeway. I've been enthralled with the area for years, ever since I saw the David Hockney photo collage when I was in college. I didn't necessarily capitalize on the landscape, but used hints of it to suggest a vast desolate backdrop. The joshua trees, the crystal clear air, and the vibrant colors made for a gorgeous day. The final product is up on my website. I can't thank everyone enough for such a seamless shoot.

The campaign I shot for Angela by John Hardy launched today on the QVC. Supermodel Angela Lindvall brings a line of luxury jewelry that has a conscious goal and is made with recycled silver. Angela recently visited Bali, where John Hardy is based, to help plant 600,000 bamboo seddlings for the Bali Province Governments "Bali Clean and Green" Program. She continues her efforts of an eco friendly lifestyle with this sustainable line of jewelry.

There's nothing better than getting to collaborate with your friends on something creative, and call it work. I have so many talented people around me and when we get to join forces professionally I find it one of the most fulfilling parts of my job. Last week I photographed my good friend Angela Lindvall for a line of jewelry she is launching this month with John Hardy. We rented one of my favorite houses in Malibu, played dress up, had an amazingly healthy meal prepared by another friend caterer of ours, and had a blast running around in the sand. I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph the Biggest Loser Winners in New York a few months back. Olivia Ward and her sister-teammate, Hannah Curlee lost a combined 249 lbs between the two of them. It was one of the most inspiring shoots I had been on in awhile. Their smiles were infectious. I couldn't stop congratulating them and feeling so proud of what they had accomplished. They looked so beautiful, radiant, and confident on that rooftop in Brooklyn.

I'm super happy to be a part of a group show at one of my favorite galleries, 210 Art Space in Laguna. I've showed there before, curated a show this past spring, and this time around I'm doing a collaboration piece with artist Peter Stow. The mixed medium show is a pairing of male and female artists working together on one piece. In most instances, a photographer submitting a photograph, and handing the image over to another artist (of the opposite sex in this instance) for them to elaborate on how they see fit. The idea came from a very successful show we did in honor of a dear friend of mine that past away, Jeff Anderson. Being a fan of Basquiat and Warhol, and the collaborations they would work on, we did a tribute show of images that had been photographed of Jeff, and then rendered by other artists who knew him well. The theme lives on with the Girls vs. Boys show, opening next weekend at the Artists for Tomorrow Gallery. If you're in the area, definitely stop by, it will be a feast for your eyes.

I got to wrap up the New York excursion with a trip outside the city for Health Magazine. We rented out the property of the Audubon Society and enjoyed every moment of the wildlife preserve. Fitness magazine ran an additional cover for the month of June and I just got my hands on it. I love how happy it looks when the situation was actually a little intense .. the wind was howling, I was standing up on a pier, and had assistants in the water and hanging from the pier holding reflectors and scrims. As I'm shooting I see a small shark swim underneath her, and decided to wait until it passed under her before I said anything to anybody. Kathy was a total trooper, let me finish shooting. We found out that it was just a sand shark, and he was harmless, so we all got back in the water for another cover try.

The new issue of ESPN's RISE magazine just landed with my images of pro surfer Lakey Peterson. We had a great two days in Santa Barbara with Lakey going to her favorite surf spot, watching her skate, trampoline, and train at home for her upcoming contests. The day we finished she hoped on a plane to Australia to compete for the next few weeks. At only 16 yrs old this girl is pushing the envelope in women's surfing and considered to be the next big star. To top if off, she's a sweetheart, grounded, donating her time to charities, and proving to be a great role model for other young girls in the sport. I love this magazine for its emphasis on women's sports and the encouragement it gives to high school girls with articles like this.

LOVE AUCTION NYC

I donated a piece to this show and program called LOVE. Its a wonderful NYC non profit organization that aims to rescue at risk teenagers who have suffered from violence, either as victims, witnesses or perpetrators from being swept further into that world. Utilizing photography and writing programs LOVE works with these young people to overcome difficult challenges and create new opportunities so that they may lead successful lives.

There is some amazing work from a star studded roster of photographers that is up for silent auction. If you happen to be in the city Monday, May 9th.. you should definitely take a look.

One of my favorite shoots this year, was traveling to Puerto Rico for Fitness Magazine. The entire crew was so much fun and the location just stunning. Each morning began with a boat ride to a private island owned by the hotel and allowed us access to crystal clear water and almost empty beaches. We worked hard for two days, capturing two covers, this inside story, and lots of extra great images for use throughout the magazine. I have an image in Women's Health this month for a story about reclaiming your inner navigation skills. I wanted to post this mostly because, I shot the image for my book.. something I try to do at least twice a month. On top of keeping your images fresh, and learning something each time you shoot, tests pay off. You acquire an image bank for future stock requests and expand your own personal library. You never know when someone will write and ask for an image of a girl with a map.

Took advantage of the beautiful weather and a great team of hair, makeup, and styling being in town. Yael Gitai, Alisha Meek, and I joined forces in Malibu to work with Natalie from LA Models. Here are a few out takes that didn't work with the story, but stood alone on their own.

FITNESS Magazine

Fitness Magazine sent me to my hometown.. Mammoth Lakes to do a winter lifestyle shoot with 5 lovely ladies, my right and left hands.. Myles and Quinn, and a great new duo for hair and makeup Kristin and Geoffrey. We had the last day of sun before the big storm hit in December, and we made use of the cabins at Tamarack when the snow started falling. Great meals, wonderful company, and some great fun proved for a perfect trip. If only I could have stayed and skied with my assistants the day after the shoot. Thank you Elaine and everyone involved!!

Took my nephew into the studio yesterday. And I'll just say that he preferred the Cstands and lights to actually having his picture taken. He was a sport though, trying on different outfits and making his attempts to stand. So cute!

LAST DAY IN KENYA

Visited a traditional Masaii village today and bought some local crafts. The people have been beyond gracious here, and I'm sad to leave this place, but in the same breathe looking forward to getting home. Thank you Project Thrive, Clay for Earth, Nokero Solar Powered light bulbs, Pureremedy, and all the people that made this trip possible.. it has been life changing.

MARA DAY 2

Day two on the Mara began with a hot air balloon ride over the plains, a champagne breakfast amongst the animals, and a safari drive home. Such a stark contrast to our past week, its hard to take in. Loving the animals and all this land has to offer.

THE MASAII MARA

After a long day of traveling from Kisii to the Mara, we were greeted by an amazing staff, some familiar faces, a great meal, and a wonderful nights rest in some beautiful luxury tents overlooking the Mara Wildlife Preserve Park. Our first day on safari produced millions of zebras, wildebeasts, a couple of rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, and a family of female lions. Definitely one of the most amazing things I think I have ever seen! It was breathtaking.

KENYA DAY 78

Our last day at the orphanage was perfect. The girls put on a fashion show, I played a slideshow that had them giggling for hours, and soccer uniforms were distributed. It began to rain and those boys headed straight for the field, stretching, running, and practicing in a complete downpour. It was so sad to say goodbye, but so great to see the impact that we left in just a few days. These kids will be forever grateful! Thank you to everyone that contributed, you really made a difference.

KENYA DAY 6 PART 2

The afternoon was spent taking medical records. Recording their height, noting any illness, and hearing their stories about how they lost their parents. Many are malnurished, some living with aids, and all have so much care that is needed. We passed out shoes and watched many smiles grow. Its been a life changing experience to say the least.

KENYA DAY 6

We broke ground today on the fishpond! My wonderful dad contributed the money to make one of these possible for the kids. It was named in honor of his dad, and today officially started the beginnings of Papa's fish pond. The pond will contain Tilapia that the kids can both eat and sell, bringing money back to the orphanage.
We also installed the volleyball court and had some lessons for the girls today. My sister and her family donated the money to make this possible. The girls were naturals and had a blast playing. Not a moment has gone by since we put it in that someone hasn't been down there playing!!

I had a little photo shoot today with the kids. They were given these beautiful scarves from Beth on our trip and taught to dance and move creatively around the grass. I grabbed each one after their lesson and let them pose for my camera. They love seeing themselves on the back of my camera and can't wait to show it to them on a bigger screen. There are no inhibitions with these kids, everything is fun, and exciting, and new. They are grateful, even if a boy gets a pink scarf, he wears it with pride. They dance like no one is watching.

Today was arts and crafts, dance, bracelet making, and any other fun thing we could come up with. We brought tons of supplies from the states and had lots of donations to contribute. The girls got to make T shirts today that we'll show off at a little fashion show on our last day at the orphanage. They were beyond excited!

Delivered matresses, a wheelchair, a stereo, and solar powered light bulbs (thanks to the guys at www.nokero.com) today. In addition to bedding, reusable diapers for the young boys, and material for the girls to make bracelets. Felt a little like Christmas today down in Kenya.

A building was donated to us not far outside of town, that will be used as the local medical clinique for both the kids and the community. Today started our Days for Girls campaign. We visited local schools and talked to them about feminine hygiene, aids, and female genital mutilation. They responded with joy and excitement at the kits that we had made to help them with their monthly cycles and the stories that were shared.

We arrived at the orphanage with the most warm welcome I've every seen. Children singing and dancing, surrounding our van, and greeting each of us with hugs and thank you's. I think everyone of us had tears in our eyes to see the gratitude and warmth in their hearts. They presented us with poems and songs they had prepared for us and we handed out candy (Thanks Tawny:) and spent time learning their names.

Our drive from Nairobi to Kisii took us through the great Rift Valley of Kenya. We stopped at local merchants, bought corn cooking on open flames on the side of the road, and stopped to help some travelers with a flat tire, while distributing candy to the local kids. The journey was gorgeous and the people, so kind. I'll keep it short as I have a few days to catch up on and only a few minutes here in the cyber cafe.

KENYA DAY 1

My first day in Nairobi was more than could be expected. We began the morning with an invitation from the head of Parliament here in Kenya to discuss our efforts with Project Thrive. A rare opportunity to say the least. A gentle and sincere man, he served us tea and pastries while showing his gratitude for our work. His support and encouragement led to a promising day. We bought sports equipment, medical supplies, new shoes, and all we could for the kids in Kisii, that we will visit tomorrow. After a productive afternoon, we headed for the giraffe refugee just outside of town. The last visitors to be there proved to be a treat, as the guards held the gates open for us and let us get up close and personal as they closed the gates down. These gentle giants ate right out of our hands, gave us kisses, and a few of us a head butt if you proved to have no food. On our way home we stopped at Carnivore for dinner, one of Conde Nasts top ten restaurants in the world. A unique experience to say the least. A sampling of ostrich meat balls, lamb, pork ribs, and some parts of the ox that I won't describe, was one of the most delicious meals I've had in a long time. Such a perfect day to kick start our trip.

The new REDBOOK Magazine is on the stands now featuring Katherine Heigl on the cover, and my images accompanying the inside story. She talks about motherhood, her new movie, and the truth about adopting. Its National Adoption Awareness month, and the story helps shed light on how to help the lives of orphans whether you are interested in adopting or not. Its a great read.

SNOWBOARD GIRLS

Last spring I went up to North Star at Tahoe to spend the day with 5 of the worlds top female snowboarders. They ran around in their long underwear, goofed off on their snowboards, and went rollerskating for my camera. We had a great day and the pictures are now on the stands in this months SNOWBOARD magazine. Thank you to everyone involved, especially Tawnya Schultz and Chris Owen, hope to do it again soon.

I had the pleasure of photographing a new collection of kids swimwear called NONO by Noelle. The line will benefit children's cancer research by sponsoring kids that are going through leukemia treatments and encouraging them to use art as a creative outlet. The first line of suits are prints made from paintings by miss Devon Weniger (the little girl in the middle of the top group photo). The line is hoping to give more children like her the opportunity to be involved in the fashion industry and give them a chance to see their artwork displayed all over the world. A portion of all the proceeds from the sales will be donated to leukemia research.
